"To pack up and leave... will it be simple and easy?"
Often in our day-to-day lives, we are 'invited' to review and (re)organize our emotional baggage and continue our journey. Changes occur at every moment in our lives, and all of them, in one way or another, demand (re)adaptations from us, which can take various forms and intensities.
But even though we are in a constant process of transformation and transition, digging through our baggage is not always an easy task, and it wouldn't be different when it comes to changing countries.
Planning and migrating abroad is not just about learning a new language, meeting different people, and experiencing a new culture. Living in another country involves taking on new challenges, making sacrifices, breaking and forming new bonds... it's having to coexist with a different culture and adapt to it, breaking down resistances, being open to the new, adjusting expectations, and facing realities. Living in another country means dealing with a 'tangle' of (re)starts and a range of emotions that often overflow, motivate, or paralyze and sabotage us. Seeking professional help can be important in certain moments.
So, what is the positive aspect of having a therapy session in Portuguese?
Some studies indicate that in moments of greater emotional vulnerability, it is natural for one's mother tongue to play a privileged role in verbalizing feelings. Regardless of one's fluency in another language, it is in the mother tongue that the foundation for initial learning, representations of the world, and emotions occurred. As a result, it is naturally more faithful in expressing our emotions and their intensities.
Considering these facts and with the aim of assisting in this personal process, psychological counselling seeks to provide a space for listening and support for Brazilians living abroad who, for various reasons, desire or require psychological assistance.
